The Instron® Auto-Injector Test System is a semi-automated solution that enables all necessary testing of injection devices to be performed in a single test, such as testing in compliance with ISO 11608-5.

The test system has been designed to house pen and auto-injectors with different geometries, thus enabling users to measure a wide range of critical data points, such as injection time, cap removal, activation force, lock-out force of the needle shield and injection mass/volume, all using a single test method.

The Auto-Injector Test System comes as an add-on for the 5900 or 6800 Series universal testing system with the TestProfiler module and Bluehill® Universal software. It is possible to add more cameras and sensors to capture much more data, such as the click during injection, needle length after completing an injection, etc.

The whole system is accommodated within an enclosure provided with an interlocked door, thus preventing the machine from running while the door is open.

The collection beaker is positioned on top of the scale, which is used to detect ejection volume (derived), ejection mass and ejection time.

The shuttle enables measuring cap removal and injection in a single test.

Pneumatic powered upper and side grips help interact with the device. The jaw faces provided on the grips can be easily swapped out to house devices of varying geometries. These grips are regulated through digital I/O outputs that are programmed in the Bluehill software.

In addition, digital inputs are provided to identify whether they are in an open or closed state. This is employed to check whether a device has been inserted properly.

Removable inserts can be custom designed to fit different cap geometries. Image Credit: Instron - USA

A highly compact Cognex camera can be fitted within the housing, thus offering clear video and images to identify the needle length of the device once an injection is completed.

A secondary monitor can be fitted to display the images taken by the Cognex camera. Moreover, it can be configured to a live mode for continuous video.

An auditory sensor can be provided to measure and detect the click during an injection. The measurement is fed to the Bluehill software as a live channel.

The blowoff valve can be configured to engage to eliminate the last drop once the injection is completed.
